BRCA Break 2015 Beauty in the Storm
Beauty can still be found in the storm if you hold your plans loosely….
BRCA break ended up being a wonderful four days of connection and community, though it ended up being different than my plan and my vision. Friday after picking up one girl from the airport we ended up driving to meet a sweet BRCA sister who wasn’t able to drive due to just having completed surgery. It was such a good four hours of honest and real conversation with others who have dealt with complications with a mastectomy. The three of us left there feeling so grateful for technology and social media that had connected us all from miles away during difficult days. It was so exciting to finally have the opportunity to meet face to face. Here’s a rundown of the rest of our weekend!
Friday night we grilled then took a trip to the Carlsbad Village for a glass of wine and listened to live music.
Saturday, there was a crazy tropical storm that came up from Mexico and ended up being very wet with thunder and lightning. The weather didn’t keep us from the farmers market, Kombucha tasting and a beautiful lunch.
At first I was stressing out about things not going as planned, but once we embraced different plans, I relaxed and shifted to plan B of staying in! The girls and I were all discussing how the storm was a metaphor for our journeys with BRCA. We all had these well laid plans and visions for how our BRCA journeys would go. For most of us our journeys ended up being VERY different from our original hopes.
Storms and disruptions that we have been through in our lives through BRCA have caused us lots of turmoil during them, but in the end we all have come out on the other side having learned so much and being forever changed in some positive way. We have all learned that holding our plans loosely and learning to sway with the storm has been so much more powerful than fighting against it!
Saturday evening some girls came to my place and we ended up eating lots of gorgeous healthy food, and were even able to sneak in a quick beach walk in between a break in the rain! Then we got to dive into some chocolate fondue with fruit and local almond champagne till late in the night. It was such a good time of relaxing and connection!
Sunday morning after the storm the weather was so clear and beautiful, things somehow seemed shiny bright and new! Some other lovely local BRCA sisters met us for a beautiful hike, beach walk and brunch. Later that evening more rain came, so we stayed in again for dinner and a movie inside.
Monday ended with healthy breakfast, exploring my local beach community, and a walk with my out of town guest and my genetic counselor friend before heading to the airport.
The weekend was so great! It was so nice to be surrounded by people who just get it. Getting the joys and the pains of the journey connects us all so deeply. The time spent together left me grateful for all who made it out to the different events and so excited to make this happen again next year!
